One would think everything that comes out of the White House would be meticulously planned and thought out. But that’s clearly not the case in the Trump White House. And a very good example of that is what happened on April 9 with first lady Melania Trump’s press conference.
The first lady used the press conference to deny any personal connection to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, and declare, “I am not Epstein’s victim.” Rumors had swirled for months that Epstein was the one who introduced the President and first lady, and that she could have also been trafficked by Epstein.
But as shocking as what she said was, the fact that she said it at all took people by surprise. “Even the president didn’t know this was happening until just before she walked out,” one insider told Rob Shuter. “He was briefed late — very late,” the source added. “This was not coordinated in the usual way.”
And the political machine reacted to that. “People were blindsided,” the insider said. “No leaks, no rollout — nothing.”
The question quickly became why. What prompted the first lady to do this press conference quickly, without coordinating a strategy with her husband and without anyone knowing? “She’s getting ahead of information,” the source explained. “There’s a belief more could come out — and she wanted her version on record first.”
Reportedly, the press conference wasn’t on Melania’s schedule until early the same day, and even when it appeared on the schedule, there was no indication of what exactly she would say.
After the impromptu press conference, however, people started making connections. And one name has popped up in multiple reports, Amanda Ungaro. Ungaro is a model and reportedly the former partner of Trump ally Paolo Zampolli. Zampolli was the man who reportedly brought Melania to the US for modeling and introduced her to Donald Trump. Some, however, like Andrew Lownie in his book about the former prince Andrew, have claimed that Epstein actually introduced them.
Ungaro claims that thanks to Zampolli, she was close to both Melania and Donald Trump. She and Zampolli separated, and she was arrested by ICE and held for months before being deported to Brazil. She has a son with Zampolli, who is currently in the US with his father and is fighting for custody.
“Amanda knows everything,” Shuter’s source said. “She may have been deported — but she hasn’t been silenced.”
Some believe her knowledge is the reason the first lady did the conference in the first place.
“She has nothing to lose,” the source added. “And that makes people nervous.”
“Melania stepping out like this wasn’t random,” the insider also said. “It was calculated.” And it means she’s expecting more stuff to come out. “She’s protecting her name,” the source explained. “On her terms.”
“This wasn’t damage control,” the insider said. “This was preemptive.”
Will it work? Debatable. The Epstein scandal continues to be at the center of most conversations these days, and that’s unlikely to change until the public knows exactly what was in those documents.
